Tuesday, May 14, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
This preparation class is being offered in advance of the Refuge Vow Ceremony with Acharya Eric Spiegel, June 21-23 at Portland Shambhala Center.
Taking Refuge in the Buddha, the dharma, and the sangha -- the Precious Three Jewels -- is a ceremony at which one formally becomes a Buddhist. By taking refuge, we commit ourselves to freedom. Having exhausted our strategies of distraction, denial, and escapism, we find that learning to experience reality directly through the path of meditation is a life-affirming choice.
The Three Jewels refer to the Buddha as the teacher and inspiration for realizing our own inherent wakefulness, the dharma as the wealth of teachings guiding us along the path of personal realization, and the sangha or community who we practice meditation with and work with on generating selfless compassion.
Taking Refuge Vows represents making the formal commitment to following the path of the Buddha in one's life and therefore becoming a Buddhist. Taking these vows enters you into the larger Buddhist community of any lineage, not limited to the Shambhala or Tibetan Buddhist community. We welcome anyone who feels inspired to participate.
Requirements: For those who are planning to take the Refuge Vow in June, attendance at the preparation class in Rockland (May 14), Portland (April 20), or Brunswick (May 18) is required. The class will include practice and study, interviews, and discussion. If it is not possible for you to attend one of these gatherings, please contact us as soon as possible. A letter of recommendation from your meditation instructor is also required. If you do not have a meditation instructor, there will be an opportunity to meet with one during the class.
Readings: The Refuge Vow Sourcebook will be available for purchase for $22.00 at the class or you can order it online. We also recommend The Decision to Become a Buddhist by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche.
