Compassion supports our warm-hearted wisdom. Kindness invites us to soften the unhelpful inner critic, as well as to understand and respond effectively to the disparate voices we hear all around us. We need compassion and kindness now more than ever: for ourselves, our communities, our country, our planet.
We hope you can join us for this eight-week course, Cultivating the Seed of Compassion. In this class, we will explore Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT®). This practice, developed and researched at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, is a system of contemplative exercises designed to strengthen and sustain compassion. CBCT is an evidence-based program shown to reduce stress, improve resiliency, and strengthen relationships. It is drawn from Buddhist wisdom and informed by current science. CBCT is secular, created for people of any or no faith tradition.
In this class, we will carefully and gently attend to the education of heart and mind, exploring the skills and conditions that allow compassion to arise and flourish. Sessions will include guided meditation, reflective exercises, and sharing to strengthen and sustain compassion. Participants will also have access to online meditation recordings through CBCT at Emory University.

Penny Clements is a CBCT® practitioner and certified Senior Instructor. Her background includes twenty years of work with non-profit institutions and service on the board of several community organizations. Over the past several years, Clements has led yoga, mindfulness, and meditation classes in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Her work with CBCT® includes facilitating classes for educators, healthcare workers, college students, parents of young children, and assisting with the CBCT® teacher certification program.
Kelly Richards is a certified CBCT® instructor and has taught meditation to children since 2006. Kelly helped create “SEE Learning,” a K-12 curriculum for compassion-based ethics through Emory University. As a school teacher, Kelly encouraged her students to learn through their senses in a classroom filled with natural objects, artifacts, and good smells. She and her husband retired to Vinalhaven in 2014, where she teaches mindfulness to children and adults. Kelly feels deep gratitude for the natural beauty and the close bonds of the community.
